Naturally Occuring Compound Increases Metabolism

Cooked Broccoli SoupA compound called NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) found in broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, edamame and avocado was found to improve metabolism, aid in weight loss and improve energy!

"NMN administration helps energy metabolism by improving the function of mitochondria, which operate as cellular power plants. They also found that mice given NMN gained less weight with aging even as they consumed more food, likely because their boosted metabolism generated more energy for physical activity."

Another reason to eat these foods on a daily basis. I always use avocado in my shakes, and I steam broccoli and add grass fed butter and sea salt and eat that on a daily basis as well!

Are you Skinny or Skinny Fat?

"I'm skinny so I can eat what I want!"

Just because you are skinny doesn't mean you are healthy. In fact there are more sick diabetic or pre-diabetic skinny people than there are sick obese people when you look at the stats and the whole U.S. population.

Pre-diabetic levels are measured by:

1. Fasting Insulin below 5, ideally below 3
2. Fasting blood glucose of 100-125 mg/dl
3. A1C below 5.7

These are tests that would be beneficial to have done annually, and even more often if you have problems. If your levels are just starting to get high, you can actually change them for the better within 2 weeks of changing your lifestyle!

New study finds colorectal cancer rates rising in Gen X and millennials

A recent study by the American Cancer Society found that Colorectal cancer rates rising in Gen X and millennials.

This is an alarming trend and research has shown that one out of two people will get cancer in their lifetime.

The good news is that many cancers are believed to be lifestyle related, so if you can take control of your lifestyle your risk of those diseases is drastically reduced.

Epigenetic research shows that 70 - 98% of health conditions are lifestyle related.

"Dr. Cercek of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center said the increase is not linked to family history, so environmental factors are likely to blame.

Some of it may be due to the fact that there have been changes in young people, in the millennial generation, in terms of a more sedentary lifestyle, dietary changes, obesity may play a role but that is not really clear,” Dr. Cercek said.

Tom Brady's Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Tom Brady and wife Gisele Bündchen (photo by @gisele / instagram)

When you learn what Tom Brady's diet is, it's not a surprise that at 39 years old he is playing at his best. Meanwhile, most NFL players have a three to four
year career due to health issues and become reliant and addicted to pain medications.

Brady eats an anti-inflammatory diet, which means his body heals and recovers much faster than other athletes eating junk food.

As featured on Forbes.com, check out his eating guidelines below:
  • 80 percent of what they eat is vegetables... if it’s not organic, I don’t use it.
  • And whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, millet, beans.
  • The other 20 percent is lean meats: grass-fed organic steak, duck every now and then, and chicken. As for fish, I mostly cook wild salmon.
  • No white sugar. No white flour. No MSG.
  • I'll use raw olive oil, but I never cook with olive oil. I only cook with coconut oil. Fats like canola oil turn into trans fats.
  • I use Himalayan pink salt as the sodium. I never use iodized salt.
  • No coffee. No caffeine. No fungus. No dairy.
  • He will eat bananas in a smoothie. But otherwise, he prefers not to eat fruits.
  • We stick to gluten free for everything

[Tom] doesn't eat nightshades, because they're not anti-inflammatory. So no tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, or eggplants. Tomatoes trickle in every now and then, but just maybe once a month. I'm very cautious about tomatoes. They cause inflammation.

Doesn't it sound a lot like some of the guidelines you have heard in my classes?

Panera Bread removing artificial ingredients

If you can't read it don't eat it. Artificial ingredients do absolutely nothing for your overall health and in fact hurt it in many ways.

Panera Bread has made the move to remove all artificial ingredients from their menu:
"ITS ENTIRE U.S. FOOD MENU AND PORTFOLIO OF PANERA AT HOME PRODUCTS ARE NOW FREE FROM ALL ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, PRESERVATIVES, SWEETENERS, AND COLORS FROM ARTIFICIAL SOURCES" Read more here.

Don't get your hopes up, I'm still not a fan of bread however they have a great selection of other things that are much healthier!

We can only hope that others follow in their footsteps.

Top 5 health posts of 2016

After 312 posts on facebook.com/KehresHealth this year, here are the top five most popular health articles:

1. Michigan loses right to farm: while most people are pushing for locally produced foods the government has a different agenda supporting large factory farms.

2. Healthy shopping list: Many people want to eat healthy but don't know where to start. The best place to start is by having healthy food in the house. If you have healthy food in the house you will eat healthy food. Especially if you start cleaning out the cupboards of all the junk food. Checkout my grocery list in the link.

3. Are NutriGrain healthy? Many people think that NutriGrain bars are healthy. After all "nutrition" and "grain" are the two words they put together to make NutriGrain so they are marketing it as a health food. But is it actually healthy?

4. Vitamin D-3: To this day I have never seen a normal Vitamin D-3 test from someone in Michigan in the winter who wasn't supplementing or tanning (normal 50-80 nm/mm). Get your levels checked and start supplementing!

5. Dr. Kehres featured in Training & Conditioning Magazine: "At Saginaw Valley State University, the most popular addition to the school’s athletic training room is not a fancy new whirlpool or high-tech wearable—it’s chiropractor Dan Kehres, DC. By including Kehres on its sports medicine team in the fall of 2015, SVSU is likely the first school in NCAA Division II to offer on-campus chiropractic care."

At Kehres Health we have had a lot of exciting additions this year!

We welcomed new staff -- Dr. Travis Falkner, Rachel, Dr. Lindsey Pfeiffer and Dr. TJ Harpham.

We welcomed two new babies! Lola Kate Kehres and Aaron Lucas Harpham.

And shared the good news that Dr. Pfeiffer is pregnant and Dr. Falkner got engaged.

All of us at Kehres Health are grateful for a healthy and wonderful 2016 and thank you for letting us be part of your year. Join us to make your health a priority in 2017!
