Natural Treatment Options for Asthma

There are natural forms of care for asthma for both children and adults, as this recent article on WebMD states: Vitamin D May Cut Risk of Severe Asthma Attacks

"Taking vitamin D supplements was associated with fewer hospitalizations or emergency room visits for severe asthma attacks -- from 6% to around 3%.Taking vitamin D supplements also reduced the number of asthma attacks needing steroid treatment.

There was no increase in side effects with the vitamin D doses given."

Besides Vitamin D, other types of treatment for asthma includes chiropractic care. It is a natural treatment that has been shown time and time again to help relieve and prevent asthma in many patients.

The stress from our daily lives puts excess stress on our bodies and our nervous systems. Chiropractic helps to reduce the stress on our bodies, reducing inflammation and increasing joint motion. Proper joint motion in the mid back is especially important for people with asthma as it increases rib motion, allowing more oxygen to be inhaled. With all joints moving and inflammation reduced as much as possible, our nervous systems can function properly which is essential for true health.

“I used to take Advair daily to control my asthma, but after one adjustment, I wouldn’t need to take Advair for at least a month,” Jordan, 28, Kehres Health & Chiropractic patient, said. “Ever since I have been getting adjusted regularly, I haven’t needed to take Advair or any other type of asthma medication.”

As asthma becomes more prevalent so does the use of asthma drugs. Unfortunately, these medications don’t come without a cost both physically and financially. Many asthma medications seem to reduce asthma at first, but ultimately mask the underlying problem while potentially causing life threatening conditions.

In 2010, due to safety concerns the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required changes in four of the major asthma medications; Advair, Serevent, Foradil and Symbicort because of their potential life threatening side effects.

It is estimated that 22 million Americans have asthma, and more than 6 million Americans use one of the four medications mentioned above.

Elimination of dairy and inflammatory processed food has also been shown to greatly reduce asthma symptoms.

Consider chiropractic, Vitamin D and other types of natural treatment for asthma, to avoid the risk of potential life threatening side effects, especially with children.

Contact us at Kehres Health & Chiropractic in Saginaw or Midland to set up an appointment as we offer chiropractic care for all ages, Vitamin D blood testing and Vitamin D3 supplements.

Sunlight, Vitamin D-3 and Seasonal Sickness

Fluctuating levels of sunlight are natural throughout year, but during the fall, winter and spring most people aren't getting nearly enough sunlight due to the lack of outdoor activity and decreased exposure to sunlight.

Sunlight increases the amount of Vitamin D-3 produced inside your body. Vitamin D-3 is actually a hormone that plays many vital roles in our bodies, especially in regulating our immune system.

Flu season follows the cycle of the sun around the world. Meaning anywhere in the world where sunlight is the least seasonally people are getting sick. Research has shown that lack of Vitamin D-3 is one of the big reasons for this.

With fall right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about how you are going to normalize your Vitamin D-3 levels. Most people benefit greatly from taking 2,000 IU to 5,000 IU per day. Getting your levels tested is the only way to know exactly where your levels are at. To test your Vitamin D levels, ask your doctor to request it in a blood test or order an at home test through Grassroots Health.

Natural health remedies: ginger

Ginger has been used as a natural medicine and remedy for thousands of years.

My favorite use of ginger is for its anti-inflammatory properties. It works on the same pathways as Aspirin and Ibuprofen but it doesn't inhibit the pathways, just down regulates them. This minimizes the risk of side effects, but you get all the benefits!

Not only can it help reduce pain and inflammation, it has been shown to slow oxidation of LDL cholesterol preventing atherosclerosis and reduce morning sickness as well.

Try adding ginger to your tea in the morning or supplementing with one gram each day (we have ginger supplements at our office).

If you are taking blood thinners such as Coumadin, consult with your primary physician before adding in a supplement.

Switch to glass containers for your health

Lifefactory glass bottles, available at Kehres Health
Research is becoming more conclusive that all plastic containers (including BPA-free) leech estrogen like compounds into the contents of the containers even if they aren't heated.

Increased levels of this compound has been linked to everything from cancer to diabetes and ADHD.

Switching to glass is easy! Glass lasts longer and stays cleaner than plastic. Consider making the switch!

Glass Lifefactory bottles are available in a variety of sizes and colors at our Saginaw chiropractic office and Midland chiropractic office. Visit www.KehresHealth.com or contact us at 989-607-4322 for more information.

Healthy Home: Honest Co. Organic Healing Balm

Using healthy and safe products in our home has always been a priority for us, especially now that we have a daughter.

Children, especially newborns, are more vulnerable to toxins and chemicals than adults are. Their immune systems and nervous systems are still developing, meaning they are not very good at processing and eliminating toxins yet. By decreasing a child's exposure to chemicals, it can help protect them from illness and allergies.

Unfortunately, many skin care products such as diaper cream contains parabens, fragrance (a variety of chemicals can hide under this broad label, and babies smell good enough, they don't need fragrance!) and phthalates.

When looking at bath and body products, I visit the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database for more information.

The Honest Company carries a lot of great, all-natural products that have very good, low ratings. We've been using the healing balm on Delaney if she has a bit of diaper rash or when her skin was really dry when she was a newborn. It can also be used on adults for dry skin or ezcema.

The Honest Company products are available at Kehres Health & Chiropractic in our Saginaw chiropractic office and Midland chiropractic office. Contact us at 989-607-4322 or visit our website www.kehreshealth.com.

It's not a magic pill, but will help you lose weight [NBC 25]

As seen on NBC 25, written by Joel Feick

photo by Joel Feick, NBC 25
By now you've seen those e-mails and infomercials about amazing diet pills. Saginaw chiropractor Dr. Dan Kehres says there's no quick, easy way to lose weight. It's still requires proper diet and exercise. But Dr. Kehres (and Dr. Oz) likes CLA.

According to about.com, patients with thyroid problems who are facing weight loss challenges may be helped by the dietary supplement conjugated linoleic acid - known as CLA -- which is reported to help body fat in people who are overweight.

A study, published in the Journal of Nutrition found that CLA reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. According to the research manager, an average reduction of six pounds of body fat was found in the group that took CLA, compared to a placebo group. The study found that approximately 3.4 grams of CLA per day was the level needed to obtain the beneficial effects of CLA on body fat.

Dr. Kehres, who's a regular contributor to NBC 25 Today says he likes CLA because it's all natural.

Check with your doctor before changing your diet or taking any supplement.

NBC 25: Coconut oil - you can cook with it, rub it on your skin and put it on bug bites

By Liz MacFarland, NBC 25

"Throw out your vegetable oil! The only oils you need in your house are olive oil and coconut oil!" That's what Dr. Dan Kehres says, a wellness physician and chiropractor in Saginaw.

Dr. Kehres says If you are cooking something that is so hot it will smoke, use coconut oil. Anything that will not be heated or only lightly sautéed, you should use olive oil.

Experts say to look for expeller-pressed, organic coconut oil. If the coconut oil is expeller-pressed, it is less likely to taste like coconuts. Dr. Kehres uses it to cook eggs, chicken, vegetables and more.
You can also use coconut oil on bug bites to stop itching and to help it heal. For dandruff even! You can rub the oil on your scalp, let sit for 15 minutes and wash out. It also works as hair conditioner, there are a variety of uses for coconut oil.

Coconut oil can also easily be made into a lotion for your skin. The easy recipe be found by clicking here.
Coconut oil is available at Kehres Health & Chiropractic in Saginaw or can be found at your local health food store.

New Month's Health Resolution: August

Soak up the sun

Food, water, air, sunlight -- the basic items every living thing needs to survive.

Our stomach growls when we need more food, we become thirsty when we need more water, we know very quickly when we need more air... but what alerts us when we need more sunlight?

The Environmental Protection Agency found that the average North American spends 90% of their time indoors.

That leaves very little time to get one of the most crucial nutrients - Vitamin D3 from the sun.

It is estimated that 85% of the American public and 95% of senior citizens are Vitamin D deficient. This deficiency has been linked to almost every health condition known -- from heart disease to cancer to multiple sclerosis.

Optimizing your Vitamin D levels is one of the most powerful things you can do naturally to protect your health and boost your immune system.

For this month's health resolution, focus on getting Vitamin D from the sun, a natural and free source, as much as possible.

As different parts of the country get varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year and everyone's skin pigment is different, the best rule of thumb is to go outside and get some sun (without suntan lotion, as it prevents 95% of Vitamin D production) until your skin turns light pink -- not red. In sunny Florida, this may be only ten minutes, but in Michigan in the winter, it could be 45 minutes. And if you don't get a chance to get outside, you can supplement with Vitamin D.

Most people need between 2,000 IU to 10,000 IU of Vitamin D a day to achieve beneficial levels. However, the average American only gets approximately 300 IU a day from their diet -- which is why deficiency and disease linked to low Vitamin D levels is so prevalent.

When a plant is sick, the first thing we do is
water it and move it into the sun. These should be the first steps humans take as well to prevent sickness and promote wellness.

Kehres Health & Chiropractic in Saginaw, MI carries a GMP-certified Vitamin D3 supplement
available in 2,000 IU and 5,000 IU. Contact us at 989-607-4322 or drkehres@kehreshealth.com to order.

Note: most tanning beds have minimal UVB rays which is what produces Vitamin D. Getting a sun burn is not healthy.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil for Dogs

Coconut Oil has many beneficial uses -- from cooking oil to whipped body lotion

We give our dog Rossi coconut oil regularly. Sometimes a small chunk of it as a treat, or when the coconut oil becomes liquid we will drizzle it over her dog food.

Our gluten-free, dairy-free, coconut oil loving shih tzu
She loves it! Coconut oil helps prevent and reduce itchiness and is good for her overall health too.

Like humans, coconut oil has a variety of benefits for dogs too:
  • Reduces pet allergies and clears up skin conditions
  • Improves digestion and reduces "doggie breath"
  • Aids in arthritis or ligament problems

Holistic veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker says “I recommend 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil for every 10 pounds of body weight twice daily.”

Pets deserve a healthy lifestyle too!

Organic coconut oil is available at Kehres Health & Chiropractic in Saginaw for $13.00. Contact us to order 989-607-4322 or drkehres@kehreshealth.com.
