18 Uses for Coconut Oil

There are many benefits of coconut oil, from cooking to skin lotion – coconut oil is one of the best products to have on hand. It is important to your health to reduce chemicals and toxins as much as possible, especially if you are pregnant or have young children at home.

Here are 18 uses for coconut oil:

1. Age spots (also known as liver spots) – applying coconut oil directly to the age spot will help it fade.

2. After shave – coconut oil will help heal your skin after shaving without clogging pores. Great for razor burn!

3. Baldness – apply three times a day to affected area of hair loss. Coconut oil supports cell regeneration.

4. Bruises – applied directly to the bruise, coconut oil enhances the healing process by reducing swelling and redness.

5. Bug bites – when applied directly to a bug bite, coconut oil can stop the itching and burning sensation as well as hasten the healing process.

Whipped Coconut Oil Lotion

If you can't eat it, don't use it is a rule I try to follow as much as possible when it comes to personal care. When it comes to skin lotion, this is an easy one to follow as coconut oil is affordable, healthy and works great as lotion.

As coconut oil changes texture with temperature, it can be difficult to use as lotion if the texture is too hard or too liquid.

By taking the simple step of whipping the coconut oil with an electric mixer for a few minutes, it creates a texture that works great as body lotion.

The coconut oil does not have to be melted first and you can add essentials oils if you prefer scented lotion. Jen likes to mix a few drops of vanilla and lemon oil in her lotion.

Store in a small tin or glass jar with a lid, and re-mix in the future if necessary.

Coconut oil has been shown to help protect skin from the damaging effects of free radicals. With its anti-aging benefits, coconut oil also helps improve the appearance of skin. Coconut oil is also anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, an antioxidant and nontoxic to both humans and animals.

Interested in a natural dandruff remedy or hair deep conditioner? Massage coconut oil on your scalp and hair, let sit for 10 minutes, then wash out. Is your pet itchy? Rub coconut oil on their skin or give them a teaspoon of it to eat.

The food pyramid and the health of America

The food pyramid was introduced in the United States by the government in 1992 with grains as the majority food group. However, the recommended 6 to 11 servings a day of grains have not been a benefit to the average American's health.

In 1992, obesity rates across the United States were less than 20%.

Ten years later, 29 states had obesity rates of more than 20%. And most recently, the CDC reported that all states have an obesity rate of more than 20%.

All-natural laundry upgrades

A simple way to create a healthier home is to remove two common sources of chemicals from your laundry room -- fabric softener and dryer sheets.

There are a variety of toxic chemicals found in these common household items that can lead to respiratory and nervous system disorders and an increased risk of cancer. 

Here are some of the chemicals found in commercial fabric softeners and dryer sheets:
  • Alpha Terpineol: can cause central nervous damage and respiratory problems
  • Benzyl Acetate: linked to pancreatic cancer
  • Camphor: causes central nervous disorders, is easily absorbed through skin
  • Chloroform: a carcinogenic neurotoxin that warns inhalation can be fatal
  • Ethyl Acetate: a narcotic that can cause liver and kidney damage
  • Linalool: causes central nervous system disorders and depresses heart activity
A study published in PubMed.gov found that fabric softener emits mixtures of chemicals can cause sensory and lung irritation and reduce airflow.

Not only are these chemicals bad for your health, they hurt the environment too.

Ready to make a change?
Instead of fabric softener, fill a Downy Ball with white vinegar and throw in the wash on top of the laundry. It works great, is a natural antibacterial cleaner and fabric softener. And it doesn't leave your laundry smelling like vinegar. 

Instead of dryer sheets, use dryer balls. They help reduce drying time (saving money) and helps soften clothes too. We use two dryer balls at a time, and ours have lasted for more than four years and are in great condition. Dryer balls can be found online or at stores such as Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond or WalMart. While PVC-free or wool dry balls are your best option, any type of dryer ball is better than using toxic dryer sheets.

Both of these changes are easy to make, will improve your family's health and will save money!

Create a healthy home

True health means taking care of all aspects of your health -- including physical, nutritional, mental and chemical. Reducing toxins is very important and typically chemical health is often the area people know the least about.

Creating a healthy home is a priority for us, and should be a priority for everyone, especially families with children, pets or immunocompromised individuals.

The use of chemicals in the home is being linked to more health conditions and diseases every year, ranging from asthma to skin conditions to cancer.
A recent study by the EPA stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air.

The Environmental Working Group found that more than one in five personal care products contain chemicals linked to cancer.

Besides the health benefits of reducing toxins, it helps the environment and is often more cost-effective. To create a healthy home, use as many natural cleaning products as possible to reduce the risk of having a chemical related illness. If you couldn’t eat it, don’t use it.
